Local Art #4 - Rachel Von Stroup
Many people today know Rachel Von Stroup as a photo journalist or as a sports journalist.
And, although she is absolutely great at journalistic photography, I most love what I will call her “life is pattern, patterns are life” illustrations and photography.
I happen to share Rachel’s love of pattern. I don’t know why I enjoy pattern (and stark contrast), but I do. If I had to guess, I’d say that maybe it invokes for me a comforting feeling of the present moment being orderly and right. I see pattern everywhere. Rachel’s art has always been a place I could turn for simple, unapologetic pattern.
Take this piece, for example. Like it’s title “Potential” suggests, you can see in it the subtly shifting pattern of a changing world. Display it rightside up, upside down, on either side (I honestly don’t even remember anymore what its orientation should be - sorry Rachel if I displayed it wrong LOL) - it still shows you that sense of motion through changing pattern. Awesome!
p.s. for another glimpse of the pattern mind of Rachel Von Stroup, look for the social media photos of her and Jeremy’s newborn - and pay close attention to the backdrop she is lying on.
